We won! First place and People's Choice at Kalamazoo Cartoon Challenge. We had three days to make an animation from start to finish. Sleep was minimal and the boys dorm was smelly (omg) but it was worth it to hang out with so many cool teams from across the country. Even if we didn't win I'd still love to compete again.

Some improvement on test I'm working on. Had a mini breakthrough in 3D animation over the weekend. Nothing life changing but stuff just finally clicked and I had an "Ohh, I GET it..!" moment. I love those moments.

Lot of stuff happened these past few weeks. Applying for internships over the summer, updating portfolios, putting together a reel that WORKS (grr), possibly starting a new mini film project, regular class work, regular outside of class work, Coraline, and Valentine's day. Yay! Now onward and hopefully upward...

More old sketches of possible Dominance War III characters. Before the theme was announced a group of us were asked to sketch out some possibilities.

This character is a female vigilante from the late 1800's protecting people, especially women, from rapists and killers such as Jack the Ripper. She lost her arm and a leg in an accident and built prosthetic limbs to replace them. She can also attach custom made weapons to her body like a prosthetic limb, much like Cherry Darling in Planet Terror, except the weapons go on her arm instead of her leg. All of her equipment utilizes steam punk style technology.

After we drew these sketches the theme for the competition was announced. All characters had to be organic: plant, animal, undead, or combinations of but absolutely no modern technology at all i.e. robots, cyborgs, androids, etc. Powers were derived from magic had to be based on one or more of the natural elements, i.e. fire, water/ice, necromancy, etc. Needless to day my Victorian Vigilante didn't fit the requirements but I still like her.

I went to the Annual Half Moon Bay Festival this weekend and got some of my x-mas shopping done! I bought a Bob Culbertson CD for my boyfriend's father and decided to redo the CD jacket. There's nothing wrong with the original, I'm still keeping it, I just wanted to make the gift more personal. It's a WIP.

The tree image was from a threadless tee designed by Peter Bragino. Various paper textures were found online.

Update 10/9

Unfortunately the Rig I used, "Norman" is a proprietary rig of Academy of Art or some other private art school like it, I don't want to get into any trouble so I'm taking it down. I've heard the creator is okay with it being used but since he was a student of that school when he created it, the school owns it. Ugh.

It's disappointing because this was one of my first 3D human acting tests and I was nearly done with it when I found out I couldn't use the rig. Ugh.

I'm working on a comic book with some friends. It's going to be an anthology with reoccurring themes. Here's my story thus far:

A priest is in the car driving to California while talking on the phone to a man named, Marty who is confessing his sins and confiding his troubles. There will be very little written dialogue so most of the speech bubbles will contain images of Marty's misdeeds.

As Marty's story escalates from fighting with his girlfriend, to doing drugs, to losing his job, the priest will cross statelines into California and will get pulled over by the police for not using a hands-free device. The priest will get a ticket and have to drive to the nearest cell phone store to purchase a bluetooth headset- all while remaining on the phone with Marty.

Because of the cellphone detour the priest is running late and makes up time by going atleast 20 above the speed limit on highway 101. When he enters the bay area (specifically SF) he gets caught by the police again for speeding on the Golden Gate bridge. By this time Marty's life story has become so thoroughly depressing that he is now at that very moment contemplating suicide. The priest cannot hang up the phone for fear of the worst, and because of this the policeman ask him to step out of the car.

Outside the car, the priest sees a man walking alone on the Golden Gate bridge. He knows that must be Marty. He tries to tell the policeman of the situation but the police doesn't listen and tells him to turn around and face the car. The priest resists, the policeman pushes his head against the trunk of the police car triggering the off button on the bluetooth device. Marty and the priest are disconnected. Marty, feeling more alone than ever climbs the bridge railing. The priest sees this and begins to shout, the police officer looks in Marty's direction just in time to see him jump. As the policeman calls for back up the priest runs to the railing and watches Marty's body hit the water.

The priest has failed. Before getting back into his car, he slowly takes off his headset and throws it into the bay. He won't be needing it anymore.

Ta-dah! Kind of a downer. Now that I've read it again I'm wondering if I'll be able to fit this all in 10 pages or less.

Made her for flash class. Originally she was going to be the nurse that all the patients fall for. Not because she's a "Helloooo Nurse!" Hottie but because she's sweet, and caring and her patients often mistake that for love and affection. I'm not sure if that mood still pulls through. I'm experimenting with color hopefully it's successful.

Last semester I rendered modeled, textured, and rigged "Noa" from SkyDoll by Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa. I found the comic series during my summer class trip to France. I love her facial expressions and the colors are amazing. Plus I have a soft spot for androids. These were some of the pics I was going to show on ACME today. Her tail is still wacked out (stupid cluster nodes...) As soon as I fix it I'll put it up on Acme.

These are a few more watercolor sketches done in Gale Antokal's class. One is wet on wet Persimmons and the one is wet to dry lettuce leaf- a classic Gale assignment. I think I borrowed the lettuce from Aletta.. or was is Ellen? Anywho, thanks to you both! And the fruit was from my mom's persimmon tree and it was delicious!

Watercolors

I took a watercolor class with Gale Antokal last semester and I highly recommend her class. These were my final pieces. We were allowed to do anything and I decided to do pieces that were influenced and inspired by Georgia O'Keefe and Chuck Close. I used a total of 3 tubes of color for the rose and 4 tubes of color for the self portrait. Both were really fun to do and I loved finding so many color combinations using so few colors. Hope you enjoy!

Some new character designs for Flash class. The old ones were too complex but I still liked them. If time permits I'd like to go back and work on them in photoshop. I'm not sure why I chose to design females. My last draft had a male but he was a robot.

Finally! The first post of my blog-Hermione's TimeTurner, Flavor-Flave Style. It started from a doodle at 3am in the animation lab and I decided to finish it up as a fun end of winter break project. One day I hope have this image printed on a t-shirt. I would wear it with pride.

There are still some things I would like to fix, like the chain, her hair, the hat, the overall shape of her body, but until the semester is over she is best kept here.
